Nearly 20 objections have been made against a street trader looking to operate on a popular Isle of Wight seafront.

Carly Sykes, of The Salty Siren, is looking to open a concession along Princes Esplanade in Gurnard, selling ice cream, lollies, drinks, slushies, buckets and spades as well as other items.

Isle of Wight Council officers have recommended the application be approved at its licensing sub-committee meeting next Tuesday, March 12.

The council has said some objections made to the application cannot be considered as part of the determination as they have referenced competition and the issue of need.

Princes Esplanade is also the home of Plaza Ices.

Under the authority's street trading policy 'need' and 'competition' are not criteria that an application can be determined by.

Other concerns raised by nearby residents include the potential fumes, noise and vibrations which come from the generator used to run the catering trailer as well as an increase in littering.

The council has been satisfied with the information provided by the applicant and none of the other statutory consultees have raised objections.

As concerns from the public still remain the application will be decided by the licensing sub-committee.

Island Roads, as the landowner, has granted permission for The Salty Siren to trade there but a street trader permit is still needed from the council.

If the application is approved, the consent would be for one year from May 20 and the concession would be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
