Hundreds of children across the Isle of Wight will head into school dressed as their favourite characters for World Book Day on Thursday (March 7).

The World Book Day mission is to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own.

The annual charity event was created by UNESCO in April 1995.

Celebrated by over 100 countries around the globe, the UK marked its first World Book Day in 1997.

World Book Day founder Baroness Gail Rebuck said: “We wanted to do something to reposition reading, and our message is the same today as it was then – that reading is fun, relevant, accessible, exciting, and has the power to transform lives.”
