FOLLOWING more heavy rain sweeping the Isle of Wight, the Environment Agency has warned the water level in Sandown on the Eastern Yar is high — and rising.

Over the past 24 hours, 12mm of rainfall has been recorded at Knighton alone.

Due to the additional rainfall, river levels at Sandown have begun to slowly rise again.

In Sandown, minor impacts could continue at Golf Links Road and Morton Common Road, with ditches around the Fort Holiday Park struggling to drain while river levels remain high, say the Environment Agency (EA).

Further rainfall is forecast to affect the area — the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge — tomorrow morning (Saturday), with up to 30mm possible.

"This additional rainfall will maintain the responsive nature of the Eastern Yar catchment, and could cause minor flooding impacts at Alverstone and Langbridge," an EA spokesperson said.

"Property flooding is currently not expected. We will continue to monitor the forecast and ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages."

Islanders are strongly advised to avoid walking or driving through flood water.

The EA will produce an update at 3pm tomorrow, or sooner, if required.
