Pupils at an Isle of Wight school fell unwell yesterday (Thursday) and police are investigating whether it is connected to the use of a vape.

UPDATE: The school has confirmed two pupils fell ill but that the incidents are unrelated.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to The Bay C of E secondary school site, in Sandown, yesterday afternoon.

Police received reports that a group of pupils had been smoking a vape. One of the pupils subsequently felt unwell and was taken to hospital, officers said.

They were later discharged.

Another pupil also became unwell at the school the same day, but it is not confirmed that this is connected to the use of the vape at this time.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers have been speaking with school officials, as well as the children involved and their parents to establish the circumstances.

"We are in regular contact and work with schools across the Island to address any issues and concerns that may be impacting the welfare of pupils, and provide support and resources for children and young people."

Police and partners will be visiting school again next week to provide some further education input to pupils.

It's understood that, before this incident, parents have had meetings with the school about students using vapes.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council said: "The Isle of Wight Council is aware of an incident at The Bay C of E School on the Secondary site.

"The Local Authority will continue to work with the school and partner agencies to understand the circumstances of the situation.

"Resources to support positive discussions with children and young people are available for parents and carers on the Safe4Me website https://www.safe4me.co.uk/parents/."

The County Press has contacted The Bay CE School and the Isle of Wight Council for comment.

The school has sought to clarify that the two incidents are separate.

It said one student fell ill after having a reaction to a vape, while the other was a medical incident.
