The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert as water levels on the Isle of Wight remain high and are expected to rise further following today’s (Thursday, February 22) rainfall.
The flood alert is active for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.
Over the past nine hours, Wroxall has recorded 10mm of rainfall, contributing to a total of 26mm over the last 32 hours.
This is in addition to the prolonged rainfall already experienced over the last few months.
As a result, levels at Alverstone have started to rise again and are projected to peak around 1am on Friday (February 23).
Similarly, water levels at Sandown are anticipated to rise throughout the afternoon, evening, and overnight.
The Environment Agency warns that low-lying areas adjacent to the river valley may experience ponding, and flooding is expected on roads, cycle tracks, and footpaths.
Although lighter rain is forecasted for the remainder of today, approximately 3mm is expected on Friday.
Islanders are strongly advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwaters for their safety.
An update on the situation is expected by 3pm on Friday.
