An uninsured teenager, over the drug-drive limit and with no licence, has been banned from driving after he collided with a truck while riding a Suzuki motorcycle.
Kayden Yates, 18, of Shanklin, who previously admitted drug driving with no insurance or licence, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court for sentencing.
At a previous hearing, on January 5, the case was adjourned pending the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
It was expected to be delivered on Friday, February 16, however, the report was not completed.
Munayah Hassan, prosecuting, said at 10pm on June 23, a pick-up truck pulled out from a junction on St John’s Road in Wroxall.
A Suzuki GS500 motorbike, being driven by Yates, appeared out of nowhere at speed, court was told.
Ms Hassan said the truck could not move out of the way in time and Yates collided with the passenger side door.
Yates asked the truck driver not to call the police, as he had no insurance or licence, but police arrived nonetheless.
A roadside DrugWipe test revealed Yates was also over the drug limit, said the prosecution.
A further blood test at the police station revealed Yates was almost twice over the limit for cannabis.
He was later taken to hospital with minor head, wrist and knee injuries.
In relation to the incomplete pre-sentence report, the unrepresented Yates said he did not receive a letter from probation until after the scheduled appointment date and had missed an email sent to him.
Magistrates asked him why he did not call probation after he received the letter, to rearrange another appointment, to which Yates replied: “I wasn’t too sure what it was about, to be honest.”
Yates told the court that at the time of the crash, he was on his way back from work and admitted he should not have been driving.
He said he was no longer taking cannabis.
Magistrates handed Yates a 12-month community order, to include 80 hours of unpaid work and ordered him to pay £85 in costs and a £114 surcharge.
Yates was also given a 12-month driving disqualification and has had his licence endorsed.
