ISLE of Wight councillors have expressed their disappointment and concerns over the Parkbury Hotel in Sandown once again being the subject of a major fire.
The fire service and police continue to investigate the exact cause of the blaze, which broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning (Saturday).
The fire is being treated as suspicious, confirmed police, and even the Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was spotted at the site yesterday evening.
“Unfortunately, the Parkbury Hotel is another victim of the scammers who bought the Ocean Hotel,” said Sandown South Cllr Ian Ward.

“While the receiver made significant progress in dealing with the Ocean, he could not achieve the same with the Parkbury.
“It was probably inevitable that something like this would take place.
“Unfortunately, the legal route of dealing with such buildings is controlled by the courts and it can take years to conclude.
“I do understand that a potential buyer has expressed interest in the Parkbury, but it is unclear if it can be sold without complying with legal permission as there are innocent people who have a legal interest in the property.”
"It's disappointing, to say the least, that yet another former hotel in Sandown has been pretty much destroyed by fire,” said Sandown North Cllr Debbie Andre.
“My heartfelt thanks go to our fire service who all worked together and got the fire under control safely and quickly.
"We need to take more effective action against irresponsible owners who allow their properties to remain empty and deteriorate.
“From April onwards, Sandown Town Council have budgeted for a Senior Planning Enforcement Officer, something I've been advocating for over several years.
“Definitely a step in the right direction to prevent further loss of our valued heritage."
“It is really sad and disappointing that yet another fire has happened at the Parkbury,” said Lake South Cllr Paul Brading.
“This hotel was always popular with visitors, as well as an events venue for locals.
“Sadly, since the Carlauren Group bought it, it has been allowed to become a derelict building, just like the Ocean Hotel.
“I am not surprised a fire has occurred, and my fear for Sandown is that this will now remain a burnt out derelict building for several years.”
