The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary said a peaceful goodbye to its 'very special donkey,' Prentice, yesterday (Wednesday, February 7).
Prentice came to the Wroxall-based Sanctuary in 2018 from a loving family near Alresford after the passing of his companion left him lonely.
As soon as he arrived, he was a big hit with everyone, thanks to his loving nature, said sanctuary staff.
A gentle giant, he would give you a firm nudge if he wanted attention and you weren't giving it to him!
Prentice is described by one of the Sanctuary's volunteers as a:
Donkey who stole my heart, a huge gentle giant with doleful eyes. He loved fuss and would come when called, if not too busy enjoying the grass. He was easy to identify, standing tall, brown and white, those big ears and gorgeous pink nose.
In recent times, Prentice was struggling to keep his weight at a healthy level and was under constant supervision at Vectis Vets.
A spokesperson for the IW Donkey Sanctuary said: "It is always difficult losing any of our beloved animals, and Prentice will be greatly missed.
"All of our donkeys end their days here at the Sanctuary, and we ensure all of our animals receive the highest standard of care.
"Rest in peace, lovely Prentice."
