STUDENTS from schools across the Isle of Wight have taken part in the Dance Live! 2024 competition.

The event has so far featured several Island schools, who performed at Portsmouth Guildhall, in front of big audiences. 

On Wednesday, January 31, St George’s School in Newport, and Ryde School with Upper Chine, took the stage.

Ryde School with Upper Chine, with their performance, entitled The Elements, earned them the Technical Award.

They impressed with their mix of ballet, contemporary dance and hip-hop in portraying the four elements of air, earth, water and fire.

St George's School performed a routine called Life is all Fun and Games — their theme based around retro gaming and how we all face different obstacles in 'the game of life'.

"It was brilliant fun and we all really enjoyed exploring costume and make-up ideas," said staff member Zoe Divers.

"Some students were Pacman and Mario characters, and we even had Tetris characters too!

"It was a really enjoyable day. All students showed so much enthusiasm and loved their day."

Lanesend Primary School in Cowes came third in the heats with their tribute to popular TV naturalist, David Attenborough.

Through the medium of dance, their piece, Attenborough: The Life of a Legend, took the audience on a captivating journey through poignant moments from his career and life, exploring our planet, habitats and wildlife.

On Friday, February 2, Medina House School, Newport, won the Fellowship Award, while Queensgate Foundation Primary, East Cowes, placed third in their heat.

In their performance of Memories of an Island, Medina House School told the tale of two friends who misplaced a beloved teddy bear — spending their time recounting the amazing time they had on the Isle of Wight, and retracing their steps in the hopes of discovering where poor Ted had gone.

"All of the scenes linked with real life trips we have had as a school, with a little creative flair," said a Medina House spokesperson. 

Entitled The Colour Monster, created by Anna Llenas, Queensgate Foundation Primary pupils explored its emotions of feeling confused and alone, as a way of highlighting the importance of understanding feelings, friendship and love. 

This week, at Portsmouth Guildhall, Dance Live! has also featured performances from teams representing Ryde Academy, the Isle of Wight Education Federation, The Federation of Nettlestone and Newchurch, and, today (Friday), Cowes Primary School.
