A UNIQUE film focussing on links between the monarchy and the Isle of Wight has been released – and is available to view on YouTube for a limited time.
Sandown & District Historical Association, working with Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community Centre, has launched the first cut of Royals Remembered.
Narrated by Island students Imogen and Neve Miller, who received certificates from Isle of Wight High Sheriff Dawn Haig-Thomas and Sandown Mayor Alex Lightfoot, the project takes viewers through events such as the late Queen's visit to Sandown and Shanklin in 1965, and the more recent visits of Prince Edward and King Charles, with interviews from Islanders involved at the time.
High Sheriff Dawn Haig-Thomas said: “What a great film and piece of history!
“Congratulations to all involved in the making of it. I loved every minute of it.”
Cllr Lightfoot added: “A fascinating look back through history, Immy and Neve were both fantastic.
“It was good to see former mayors from Sandown and Shanklin, and representatives of community organisations at the screening.”
For four weeks, the film is available to view on the Growing Up In The Bay YouTube channel.
Further cuts, with new stories and memories will feature at its premiere.
The film was originally a Jubilee project and has been updated to include recent events.
It is part of the Growing Up In The Bay series on YouTube, which also includes the history of Sandown and Shanklin war memorials, bombing raids on Shanklin, with all films including personal anecdotes and rarely (if ever) seen footage from the time.
“Sandown, and the Bay, has a rich and diverse heritage,” said Cllr Lightfoot.
“And the film gives a flavour of part of that history, and those at the launch are looking forward to future Historical Association projects, and films that capture the community spirit of the town.”
