A video, taken by Lauren Hambly, shows the man hanging on the back of the moving lorry.
Posting on Facebook, she said: "Just lost for words really. That's one way to get up a hill!".
The vehicle was driving from Ryde Esplanade up George Street, Ryde at the time.
The footage was taken on Sunday night (28).
Co-op has confirmed the driver of the lorry did not know the man was there.
Commenting on the video, a spokesperson said: “We do not condone the very dangerous actions of this individual, which were unknown to our driver at the time.
"Irresponsible behaviour such as this could lead to serious injury or worse.”
