There is still no date for the removal of temporary traffic lights which have been causing lengthy delays at a busy Isle of Wight junction.

The permanent set of lights at Downend were damaged in the early hours of January 10 and are yet to be fixed.

Island Roads said it will carry out repairs "as soon as possible" and has apologised for any disruption.

The firm said a road traffic accident caused "significant damage" to the permanent lights and the electrical supply cabinet.

It said: "Specialist equipment and expertise is required to replace the damaged apparatus."

Since the incident, temporary lights have been in place, prompting tailbacks.

On January 24 there was a fault with the temporary set, leading to even longer delays, as previously reported.

Island Roads has said it still does not have a date for when the temporary set will be removed.

A spokesperson said: "We are in regular contact with our supply chain partners and we will, of course, carry out the necessary repairs and replacement as soon as possible.

They added: "Unfortunately, temporary lights are not as effective as permanent sets which have far better vehicle detection capabilities and also the ability to adapt to changing traffic flows. 

"We do monitor the temporary lights and can make some adjustments as required.

"We apologise for any delays while the temporary lights are in place."
