A new group has been formed to champion the 'preservation and rerouting' of the Isle of Wight's Military Road.

For years there have been fears over the iconic route's future, due to coastal erosion.

This has been brought to the fore again in recent weeks after a void appeared next to the highway and closed a footpath.

As exclusively reported, Island Roads has said there were 'no signs of movement' detected when recent surveys of the road were carried out.

The firm also said there was 'nothing to suggest' it was is in danger of imminent collapse.

A spokesperson said: "We will of course continue to monitor the area and will liaise closely with the Isle of Wight Council to ensure all steps are taken to maintain a safe road network."

Now, a Facebook group has been formed to act as a 'rallying point' for those who want to fight for the road's future.

Formed by Lisa Buck, Save Military Road IOW's aim is to have the road 'rerouted and preserved'.

A message from the group reads: "Support finding a viable rerouting option that protects both the view and the road's function.

"Believe in advocating for parliamentary assistance to make this reroute a reality.

"Together, we can raise our voices and ensure the future of this beloved Isle of Wight treasure."

Island Roads said a retaining wall was built and buried next to the road in 2004, so it did not detract from the natural beauty of the area.

It was designed to protect the road from erosion for around 50 years.
