THE Isle of Wight’s Amazon World is celebrating the birth of a very special animal – a Gouldi’s monkey, which is classed as a vulnerable species.
First-time mother, Coco, ten, gave birth to a single offspring in the early hours of Wednesday, December 6.
“We are so excited to announce the birth,” said a spokesperson for the Newchurch zoo.
“Our pair, Hamish and Coco, are part of the European ex-situ breeding programme.
“This new arrival is important for the species, as they are classed as vulnerable in the wild on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
“The youngster will spend the first few weeks clinging tightly onto Coco’s back.
“When it gets a bit bigger, Hamish will take turns caring for and carrying the baby.
“Our keepers won’t be able to determine the gender of the baby until it starts to spend time off mum, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we know!”
