A flood alert has been issued on the Isle of Wight this morning (Tuesday, January 2), with the Environment Agency advising East Wight residents to protect their homes and gardens.
A warning has been put in place for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge, amid continued rainfall due to Storm Henk.
In the last 24 hours, around 21mm of rain has fallen in Wroxall, in addition to the prolonged rainfall already experienced over the last few months.
From around 1pm today, water will be ponded on low-lying land adjacent to the river throughout the river valley, on roads, cycle tracks and footpaths, the Environment Agency said.
At Langbridge and Alverstone Road Bridge, the river will be close to the top of the riverbank.
Flooding on Golf Links Road and Morton Common in Sandown may occur from 6pm.
The Environment Agency warns that ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain, and further rain is possible today – up to 15mm.
A spokesperson said: “We continue to monitor and will ensure the river remains free of any reported blockages.
“Please ensure any products used to protect gardens and property from flooding are operating.”
An update will be issued by 3pm or sooner if the Environment Agency expects property flooding.
