Two Isle of Wight roads will be closed today (Monday, December 11) as Island Roads start major improvement roadworks.
Stroud Wood Road, between the Carters Road roundabout and Main Road, Havenstreet, and Drill Hall Road, off Carisbrooke Road and Newport High Street, are both being ‘improved’.
Both schemes involve deep excavations and strengthening of the highway foundation to address issues that have led to deterioration in the road surface.
As a result, Island Roads says, 24-hour road closures will be required at both locations for the duration of the work, although access to properties will be maintained ‘if it is safe to do so’.
The work on Stroud Wood Road is expected to last five days, and the work on Drill Hall Road up to eight days.
Residents in both locations have received letters outlining the work and the effects it will have on access.
Access to Drill Hall Road car park (Britannia car park) will be “maintained as long as it is safe to do so.”
An Island Roads spokesperson said: “The work at both locations involves us having to excavate at depth, so unfortunately, it won’t be possible to re-open the roads again at the end of each shift.
“This work is, however, designed to reduce the need for future road repair.
“We would like to thank residents in advance for their cooperation and understanding.”
