Hundreds of people lined the streets of Newport on the Isle of Wight today (Sunday) to pay their respects and remember those who died in war.

A Remembrance procession in homage to the fallen weaved its way through the town at 10.30am on Remembrance Sunday.

Starting at Drill Hall Road, it made its way along the High Street to St Thomas' Square. 

The parade was led by Royal British Legion parade marshal, Simon Tutton, and featured Vectis Corps of Drums Marching Band and the Air Cadets, among other groups.

Islanders then gathered in St Thomas' Square for a Remembrance service held by Canon Sarah Chapman.

Cllr Ian Dore, the council's Armed Forces Champion, read poem, For the Fallen, by Laurence Binyon, before onlookers took part in a two minutes' silence.

A ceremony saw Lord-Lieutenant Susie Sheldon, High Sheriff Dawn Haig-Thomas, council chair Cllr Claire Critchison, and Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely lay wreaths.

Other dignitaries and representatives also attended.

After wreath laying, crowds joined in singing hymn, O God, Our Help in Ages Past and prayers were said.

The service concluded with a second parade and the Lord Lieutenant took the salute in the High Street.
