Islanders have been asked to ‘work together’ after reports that sandbags have been stolen from outside Isle of Wight homes, as Storm Ciaran closes in.
Isle of Wight Police say that the council have received reports that a number of sandbags have been stolen from addresses in East Cowes.
A police spokesperson said: “Not only is this morally unacceptable, but it is also theft.
“Please let’s work together to keep people and property safe over this period of adverse weather.”
Free sandbags are available from Well Road in East Cowes, Simeon Street Recreation Ground in Ryde and St Mary’s Car Park in Cowes.
The council said these locations have been chosen due to the direct risk of flooding in these areas.
A council spokesperson said: “Please be mindful of the needs of others in your community and only take what you need to protect your property. Generally, three sandbags should be enough per door at your property.”
Additional sandbag distribution sites may be set up in areas of flooding or where the Environment Agency advises of potential risk.
Vulnerable residents can call Wightcare on (01983) 821105 to arrange delivery of sandbags to their properties.
The council’s Floodline remains open throughout the night on (01983) 823111.
