A prolific Isle of Wight shoplifter turned aggressive in the dock after being jailed for his third theft conviction this year.
Robert McCamley, of Barton Road, Newport, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 27, and pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said the 41-year-old entered Newport’s Asda at 8.40pm on September 2 and placed George clothing and a vacuum cleaner in his trolley, worth £205, before avoiding the checkouts and walking straight out of the store.
Ms Miller told the court that in March, McCamley was handed an 18-month community order for committing ten thefts before avoiding a jail sentence in July after pleading guilty to a further five.
A representative of the probation service said McCamley drinks around seven cans of strong cider a day, sometimes spirits too, and has been known to take crack cocaine and heroin.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said his client had no money after having difficulties receiving his benefits payments but claimed McCamley had been seeking help.
Mr Vincent questioned what would be achieved by a prison sentence.
Magistrates instead decided to hand him an eight-week prison sentence, to which McCamley turned aggressive in the dock while being led away, repeatedly asking, “Why are you doing this to me?” and shouting obscenities.
