AN ISLE of Wight aquatics shop has paid a heavy toll after being hit with ‘the worst flood in the business’ history”, losing £40,000 worth of stock, including koi carp.

Hunnyhill Aquatics, based in Newport, says 99 per cent of its outdoor stock was washed away in the floodwater.

Staff member, Tim Walker, said fallen branches and debris blocked up the river nearby, causing floodwater to burst through a fence and into the yard.

Almost all the business’ outdoor stock was lost, with around 1,000 goldfish and carp washed away.

“It was so strong,” said Tim.

“The floodwater was 4ft high in the shop, though we managed to save most of the indoor fish.

“We’ve lost at least £40,000 – around 95 per cent of our pond stock.”

A power cut actually helped save a lot of the indoor fish, preventing the filters from pumping dirty floodwater into the fish tanks.

In the wake of the flood, fence panels and stock could be seen floating in the duck pond down river.

“We are open for business today, but please only visit if your aquatic needs are very important,” said a spokesperson for the business.

“All the fish inside the shop are still alive and swimming after the generous amount of help from staff, locals, friends and family, but much more is still to be done.

“We thank each and every one of you who helped, and we also appreciate all the love and wishes everyone is sending.

“Hunnyhill Aquatics will be back, bigger and better than ever!”
