The Isle of Wight-owned cargo ship, Verity, has sunk, leaving one crewman dead and four others missing after a North Sea collision.
A search and rescue operation began after Verity collided with a larger ship, Polesie, about 14 miles south-west of the German archipelago of Heligoland, at around 5am this morning (Tuesday, October 24).
The Bahamas-flagged Polesie stayed afloat, while the Verity, became submerged.
Germany’s Central Command for Maritime Emergencies said two sailors were rescued but the body of one man had been recovered following the incident.
The Verity had departed from Bremen in Germany, and was destined for the port of Immingham on the east coast of England.
The owner of Verity, Faversham Ships Ltd, which is based in East Cowes and told the County Press is has no comment on the situation at this time.
The cargo ship was often seen off Cowes and East Cowes.
