Police have released an update following at least 20 cars being smashed with a 'baseball bat' in Niton yesterday morning (Saturday, October 21).

Emergency services were called shortly after 8.30am to reports that a woman was damaging several cars with a baseball bat on Chatfield Road.

A large police response attended, and a 33-year-old woman from Niton was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.

No injuries were reported, said police, but at least 20 vehicles had been reported as damaged.

The rampage started on Chatfield Road, through Rectory Road, Church Street and down as far as the bus shelter on Blackgang Road.

Residents reported that smashed glass from car windows littered the village's streets and a big clean-up began, with villagers trying to cover up windows amid heavy rain so the weather didn't cause further damage.

One woman, inspecting the damage to her car, told the County Press she just thought it was 'really sad'.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed the 33-year-old woman arrested has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.

Her bail date is January 21, 2024, the force said.
