AS MANY as 12 residents evacuated from flats above a fire in Ryde last night (Sunday) are currently unable to return to their properties.

A serious fire broke out in an alleyway off High Street at around 12am, between Age Concern and Diamond Pet Supplies.

A total of 12 residents fled their properties above the blaze and are being supported by the Isle of Wight Council.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “The Isle of Wight Council’s housing team were contacted by the fire service for support.

“The team liaised directly with the residents of the properties affected and can confirm that all residents were supported to secure accommodation for the night.

“The housing team continues to support those impacted and are currently awaiting confirmation as to when residents may be able to return to their own homes.”

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attributed the fire to an electrical fault, and two breathing apparatus and a single hose reel jet was used to bring it under control.

A number of properties and businesses in the area were without power this morning (Monday), in the wake of the incident.

John Askew of Diamond Pet Supplies said five shops were impacted, but he was pleased with how quickly engineers restored power.

Mr Askew said the alley is an accessway for the flats above.
