A DRUG driver who overtook a police car and sped off in his Vauxhall Zafira leaving officers in his wake on one of the busiest roads on the Isle of Wight, will learn his fate later this month.

Robert Godley admitted two charges of drug driving in Newport on March 27.

The attention of police on patrol in Fairlee Road was drawn to 42-year-old Godley's car behind them — swerving across the road and the white line on the carriageway — in a 30mph zone.

But when it changed to a 40mph limit, Godley, of no fixed address, overtook the police car and officers immediately turned on their dash cam, with Godley hitting 70mph at one point, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

Police followed Godley another 300m-400m before they activated their lights and pulled him over.

In a roadside drugs test, Godley tested positive for cocaine and was arrested.

At Newport Police Station, Godley provided a blood test reading of 15ug/L for cocaine (the legal drug-drive limit is 10) and 200ug/L for the cocaine metabolite, BZE (the limit being 50).

Godley, with a record of 18 convictions for 40 offences, initially gave not guilty pleas on August 11.

In February last year, Godley was handed an 18-month probation order for two assaults against the same woman, in which he threatened to drive her off a cliff, and two counts of criminal damage, which included him doing 250 hours' unpaid work.

To date, Godley had only completed 2.5 hours of it because he was unfit due to mental health issues.

For Godley, Michael McGoldrick said his client was due to stand trial on October 25 and "wisely changed his drug driving pleas on advice".

Jobless Godley, a dad of four, lived some distance from his estranged wife and their children and would now find it difficult to carry out some of his childcare responsibilities, Mr McGoldrick added.

Probation described Godley as being a medium risk of causing harm to the public.

Magistrates ordered a report and bailed him to reappear for sentencing on October 27.

A interim driving ban was imposed.
