Tributes have been paid to Sandown's Valerie Stephenson, who has died at the age of 81.

She was so dedicated to the community, and interested in health and fitness, the skate park on Fort Street was named in her honour.

It was said at the time that her determination and hard work brought about getting the skate park installed.

Cllr Heather Humby paid tribute to Miss Stephenson this week.

She said: "Sandonian’s will be sorry to hear of the death of Miss Valerie Stephenson.

"Val, a former Sandown councillor, was a much valued member of the Sandown community, and it was her enthusiasm to find play areas for younger people, that resulted in the town council creating the skate park at Sandham Grounds, which was named after her.

"Val had been a school teacher, specialising in sport, and following her retirement, for many years, she ran keep fit classes at St John’s Annexe, specifically adapted for more elderly residents.

"She felt it not only helped their mobility, but also provided social contact for those living alone.

"Val requested that she did not want a funeral, however, I know she will always be remembered, for the support she undoubtedly gave to the young and elderly residents of Sandown."

Val was Sandown born and went to school at the former Westwing School in Ryde.

She taught in New Zealand for 15 years, before returning to Sandown, where she lived in St John’s Road.
