As news breaks that popular Isle of Wight attraction Robin Hill is to be sold, we take a look back at the highs and lows of the country park which has been a firm family favourite for decades.
Owned by Vectis Ventures, which also runs Blackgang Chine, Robin Hill, complete with its toboggan, Cows Express, Swinging Galleon and Big Red Tractor Train, is to be sold as a 'going concern', according to a statement today (Monday).
It follows what the company called a “prolonged period of financial turbulence", which prompted it to close earlier than expected, this season.
Here we take a look back at what has been one of the Isle of Wight's top family attractions...
Opening its gates
Robin Hill opened in 1971, offering adventure and exploration.
Younger visitors enjoyed outdoor play areas and the Cows Express, while the Colossus, 4D Cinema and Jungle Heights kept older children entertained.
Events host
For years, Robin Hill hosted Rob and Josie Da Bank's Isle of Wight Bestival, bringing tens of thousands of people to enjoy music from a host of internationally-renowned acts, including Elton John, Snoop Dogg, Stevie Wonder and The Jacksons.
When Bestival moved to the mainland, Scouting for Girls, Pixie Lott, Toploader the The Hoosiers kept the music going at boutique festival, Eklectica.
Hot air balloon events have proved popular in recent years.
Over the years, plans were announced for on-site glamping, including tree houses and lodges, and a multi-million pound waterpark, which would have been called ‘The Springs’. However, the ideas appeared not to get off the drawing board.
This season's events
Robin Hill's Fiesta of the Dead event, will be held this month, but at Blackgang Chine instead.
Those with tickets for a date when the site is now closed have had them transferred to Blackgang Chine.
Staff let go
In September, 36 staff were let go, while others were moved to sister attraction, Blackgang Chine, when Robin Hill closed early for the season.
At the time of the closure, Vectis Ventures said no permanent staff had been made redundant.
Events cancelled
As a result of today's announcement, the park's Christmas parties and Polar experience have been cancelled.
Alexander Dabell, owner of Vectis Ventures said: "Full refunds will be made to those who placed their deposits with us and no one will suffer any financial loss."
