Leave extra time on the school and work run tomorrow (Wednesday, September 6), as the disruptive works on a major Isle of Wight road will still be there – but the end is in sight.
Southern Water began work on a burst water main on Whippingham Road yesterday, causing huge queues stretching beyond Whippingham into East Cowes.
Although the repairs are complete, the utility company is still finishing off ‘reinstating the road back to its original condition’.
A spokesperson from Island Roads said: "Southern Water are currently using emergency powers to fix a leak in Whippingham Road. As a utility company, they have a legal right to undertake this work.
"Our role is to liaise with them to seek to reduce inconvenience and we have asked them to use manually controlled lights to help keep traffic moving."
Two-way lights are in place to allow traffic flow while the finishing touches are applied.
A spokesperson from Southern Water said: “We’re sorry for the impact our work to repair a burst water on Whippingham Road has had on residents, businesses and commuters.”
The works, which have added an hour to peak time journeys, are expected to continue until tomorrow afternoon.
