An Isle of Wight man, who subjected a dog to cruelty and neglect, which lead to the whippet being put down, will be sentenced next month.
Stuart Squibb, of Lower Furlongs, Brading, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 15.
A representative for the RSPCA said the 26-year-old caused an 11-year-old fawn-coloured female Whippet type dog, known as Weasel, ‘prolonged cruelty and neglect’.
Between November 14, 2022, and January 14, 2023, Squibb failed to address the cause of the dog’s poor bodily condition and weight loss.
Squibb also failed to provide vet treatment regarding Weasel’s osteoarthritis and limb deformity, the RSPCA reported.
The court heard that the dog was put down.
Squibb previously denied the offence.
Michael McGoldrick, defending, said his client did try his best to look after Weasel but admits it was not good enough.
Mr McGoldrick told the court Squibb knows he could have done more and sees that now.
Magistrates confirmed all options remain available, including custody, and ordered a pre-sentence report to be carried out ahead of sentencing on September 22.
