FIREFIGHTERS were called to a suspected fire in a Sandown hotel this afternoon (Thursday).
At around 2.40pm, crews from Newport and Ryde were called to the scene on the Esplanade.
They were responding to reports of a fire in the derelict Ocean Hotel.
A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service (HIWFRS) said a homeless person has taken up residence at the site, and had been cooking earlier today.
Members of the public spotted smoke coming out of the chimney and alerted the fire service.
HIWFRS confirmed it is not the first time crews have been called to the hotel on account of someone cooking in the derelict building.
Fire crews have since stood down, but police remain at the scene.
