There was high drama at Cowes Week 2023 as an Isle of Wight-based yacht, which had been leading by a distance in the sonar class, was forced to retire and limp back to Cowes with a broken mast.
'Jenny' and crew were 400m clear when the mast broke, leading to a loss of momentum and a motor boat having to drag the beleaguered vessel back to Cowes harbour.
In an exclusive interview with the Isle of Wight County Press, who were first on the scene, the crew seemed in good spirits, despite their misfortune.
The cheery skipper of Jenny said: "We are going to attempt to replace the mast."

After yesterday’s abandonment of all events, due to inclement weather, people braved another grey day to compete in the nation’s premier sailing regatta.
The skipper added, with a glint in his eye: "Tomorrow is another day."
