I absolutely agree with Wightlink User Group founder Bronway Hamilton Brown's concern for small children on the new pedestrian walkway of Ryde Pier.
The danger for them there struck me immediately.
It's now very pleasant to stroll down the pedestrian walkway.
So much so, many families and friends stop to chat and enjoy the view, previously having had to make a careful dash for it with moving cars and bikes just inches away.

But now, what of little youngsters while grownups are standing around or comfortably sitting, deep in conversation and admiring the view at leisure?
Working off energy, climbing on and through the easily accessible 'playground' railings.
It takes only a moment for a little hand to lose its grip, and the child falls into the sea.
How long until the little one is retrieved from the water, alive or dead?
For a Wightlink spokesman to complacently say such railings are also used at the car park and in other maritime settings, is beside the point.
Parents get their children from car park to waiting room and back again as quickly and directly as they can, fully supervising them.
But the lovely new pedestrian walkway encourages us to relax, linger and enjoy the view ... not realising that the health and safety of accompanying children - something we ordinarily can assume has been taken into account in public spaces - has in fact been completely ignored.
Wake up Wightlink!
