A HUB for the social needs of an Isle of Wight town's community has received a £250 cash boost from Ventnor Rugby Club.

The club presented a cheque to The Better Days Café, which opened its doors at the former Central Hotel last year.

They raised the money when its Watcombe Bottom ground was used as a marshalling post and feeding station during the Isle of Wight Randonnee cycling event in May.

The aim of the cafe, established by Kirsty Chapman, is to act as a hub for the social needs of Ventnor — providing a pathway to employment for people with mental health and learning disabilities, as well as a signpost for assistance for mental health issues and benefits advice.

Kirsty said: "People with these issues are invisible, often feeling socially excluded and lonely.

"A large amount of these people will never have worked, worn uniform or felt part of a team."

The Better Days Cafe also trains and offers work to these people, to help promote inclusion and alleviate loneliness.

"When the Bishop of Portsmouth visited the cafe recently, he was so impressed, he recommended all towns should follow their example," said Roly Toombs, of Ventnor Rugby Club.

The Better Days Café plans to expand its services by offering breakfasts and a lunch club to children during the school holidays.
