An 18-year-old from Ryde has been disqualified from driving for two years after pleading guilty to his third drug driving offence in 12 months.
Cameron Younie, of Westfield Park, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Friday, June 30.
Lauren Stone, defending, said Younie was driving his red Ford Fiesta along Fairlee Road in Binfield during heavy rain at 5pm on December 18, 2022, when police spotted him overtake three cars at ‘excessive speed’.
Police pulled him over and discovered a ‘heavy smell of cannabis’, arresting him and taking him to Newport Police Station.
At the station, a test confirmed that Younie had a cannabis reading of 2.7 in his blood when the legal limit is 2.
Oscar Vincent, defending, said Younie received a panicked phone call from his girlfriend saying her home was being broken into, and he decided to act.
Mr Vincent said his client insists he did not overtake three cars during one manoeuvre but instead over three stages – overtaking each one at a time.
While working in Turkey earlier this year, he completely stopped his cannabis use, Mr Vincent said.
Magistrates warned Younie if he does not comply, he will face custody. He was banned from driving for two years and handed a 12-month community order to include 180 hours of unpaid work.
