Newport’s historic Wadhams building, previously the home of Topshop, will become a campus for the Isle of Wight’s music college as it branches out to offer Islanders a new university-level fashion degree.
Platform One is expanding its horizons by moving into the world of creative education, bringing a change of name and a second campus.
With the announcement, the college, which has produced many successful musicians, including Wet Leg, is transitioning to ‘Platform One Creative Education’, with the college’s new Sustainable Fashion Department opening in September.
The building development of the new St James’ Square campus will include the restoration of the shop front back to its original Wadhams design.
Through this, the college now offers BA (Hons) Sustainable Fashion, written by Platform One and validated through the University of Chichester.
Study programmes will also include a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma - equivalent to three full A Levels.
The degree has been conceived and written in partnership with Hannah Woodford, whose industry experience includes Madame V, Selfridges, Marks and Spencer and Burberry.
David Pontin, Platform One’s education director, said: “The launch of Sustainable Fashion Department is a milestone for Platform One and a commitment to a much wider creative industries offer for the Island.”
Hannah, head of sustainable fashion, said: “This is such an important opportunity for the Isle of Wight and something that I have been working towards for many years.
“The ethos and design of the study programmes are built around sustainability - fundamental for the long-term well-being of our planet.
“We are lucky to have an incredible building, which is going to be such a unique learning space for the students.”
