The new pedestrian walkway on the Isle of Wight's historic Ryde Pier has been closed, less than a week after it opened.

As the County Press reported, it was opened to the public for the arrival of Isle of Wight Festival-goers on Thursday, June 15.

Priot to that, there had been questions over whether it would be ready in time.

Festival-goers were able to use the walkway as they headed to the bus station on Thursday.

However, Wightlink, which owns the pier, has now said it has been temporarily shut.

It will be closed today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday).

The ferry firm has said it is to allow for shelters and seating to be installed.

In the meantime, it is asking foot passengers to use the footpath on the main pier.

Wightlink said: "We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

The new walkway links Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade.

It replaces the old tramway and has been built on the Victorian cast-iron piles, next to the railway pier.
