An 18-year-old from Ryde has pleaded guilty to his third drug driving offence in 12 months after police caught him overtaking vehicles at high speed on a main Isle of Wight road.
Cameron Younie, of Westfield Park, attended the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court via video link from Turkey on Tuesday, May 23.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, said Younie was driving his red Ford Fiesta along Fairlee Road in Binfield during heavy rain and darkness at 5pm on December 18, 2022, when police spotted him overtake three cars at ‘excessive speed’.
Police pulled over the 18-year-old and discovered a ‘heavy smell of cannabis’, arresting him and taking him to Newport Police Station.
At the station, a test confirmed that Younie had a cannabis reading of 2.7 in his blood when the legal limit is 2.
Michael McGoldrick, defending, told the court his client has been working in Turkey and suggested a pre-sentence report was needed before sentencing.
Magistrates’ agreed, and Younie will appear for sentencing on June 30, pending the report.
No driving restrictions were made, as Younie has already been disqualified from driving until February 16, 2024.
