A Dementia Hub will be developed in Cowes, after a 25-year lease was agreed by the Isle of Wight Council.

As previously reported by the Isle of Wight County Press, Parklands will be developed, by the Alzheimer Café Isle of Wight, into a community base with meeting area, activities, training, support and advice, for patients and their families.

The news is being welcomed during the Alzheimer's Society's Dementia Action Week, which runs until May 21, a year after an official Isle of Wight dementia strategy was officially launched.

Maggie Bennett, from the Alzheimer Café Isle of Wight said: "We are thrilled we will be able to work towards providing long term support through a dedicated community and wellbeing dementia hub. Through activities and support we will aim to ensure that mental and physical health is a priority for people with dementia, as well as making sure they will be able to access support and advice when they need it."

Isle of Wight County Press:

Last year, an estimated 2,655 people over the age of 65 on the Island were living with dementia.

That could increase to 3,920 by 2030, according to The Alzheimer Society.

Councillor Karl Love, Cabinet member for adult social care, said: "It is a positive step forward.

"I am delighted the hub has now been approved by Cabinet and will be providing much needed support.

"We would like to thank our strategy partners and everyone that contributed and offered feedback, in particular our Island residents and important volunteer carers, who have shared their personal experiences."
