FIREFIGHTERS from Newport tackled a Mercedes car fire, which closed a major Island road this afternoon (Thursday, April 27).
A crew from Newport Fire Station were alerted to a car well alight on Newport Road near Northwood, opposite the Wight Military and Heritage Museum, shortly after 1pm.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said the road was blocked in both directions.
The road was closed as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire with hose reel jets.
The vehicle, a white Mercedes convertible, was moved off the road, and the scene was made safe.
Firefighters returned to the station following the stop message at 1.50pm.
