IF YOU want to try out a fun sport that will challenge you for technique and accuracy, why not try your hand at archery on the Isle of Wight during Start Archery Week next month.

West Wight Archery Club invite budding Robin Hoods, aged 12 and over, to a special event at their field behind Newport's Medina Leisure Centre, on bank holiday Monday, May 8, when the country celebrates the coronation of King Charles III.

The event will be part of national Start Archery Week, which runs from Saturday, May 6, to Sunday, May 14.

Now in its 11th year, Start Archery Week sees archery providers across the country open their doors to potential archers — welcoming people of all abilities to have a go at what is one of the most accessible sports around.

Andrea Beddard-Smith, of West Wight Archery Club, a member for 30 years, said: "This fun and inclusive sport is perfect for anyone wanting to try something new — on their own, or with their family and friends.

"Even those who have never picked up a bow before, will be able to enjoy the satisfaction of successfully hitting the target.

"Aside from its amazing social appeal, archery has many health benefits for both body and mind.

"It can help develop physical strength and fitness, as well as boost confidence and
increase mindfulness.

"By enticing new participants to the sport, it is hoped archery’s natural appeal to a wide
audience will be evident to everyone involved.

"Visitors will be able to have a go at the sport and meet friendly members or coaches to help you shoot.

West Wight Archery Club, based in Newport, has been running for 36 years and has members of all abilities, who take part in archery each week.

They currently have 25 members, but are keen to boost numbers into their "friendly little club".
