AN ISLE of Wight man who crashed his car into a Newport roundabout couldn’t remember events after leaving a pub.

Ashley Coulson, of Melville Street, Ryde, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday, March 28.

The 34-year-old admitted drink driving in Newport, on September 16.

Prosecutor, Tom Corke, told the court police had been alerted by a member of public in the early hours of the morning, and arrived at the scene to find a car in the middle of the roundabout on St George’s Way.

They noted alcohol in the vehicle and located the driver, Coulson, nearby, walking in the middle of the road.

He was described as staggering and dazed, and was initially taken to hospital for treatment over concerns for his welfare.

Mr Corke said it was only by good fortune that no one had been injured.

Coulson registered a blood-alcohol reading of 148 when the legal limit is 80.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Coulson had been to see a friend and parked on Newport High Street.

He consumed four beers at the Hogshead, and the rest, he couldn’t remember. The events of that day were significant enough for him to quit drinking.

Coulson was disqualified from driving for 18 months, fined £200, with costs of £85 and an £80 surcharge.
