THE Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary has announced the death of two of its much-loved donkeys today (Monday, March 27).
On Saturday evening (March 25), the Sanctuary said goodbye to Jill and Angelica, who had both been adopted by award winning Isle of Wight indie rock band Wet Leg.
The donkeys had been closely monitored for a while, as both had various health issues that were causing concern.
Jill was part of the OAP herd for many years and enjoyed meeting visitors over the time she has lived at the Sanctuary.
In her later years, Jill was unable to eat as well as the Sanctuary’s younger donkeys, due to dental and other internal issues. She was often served a selection of watered-down sugar beet and grass nuts.
Despite her age-related stiffness, Jill would enjoy trotting around the field with the other OAPs.
The Sanctuary team said on Facebook: “In consultation with our vet, surrounded by our dedicated farm team, Jill was helped to pass.
“Jill was a joy to be around and will be deeply missed.”
The team also said goodbye to its ‘little mischief’ Angelica, who may have been one of the smallest donkeys, but was one of the biggest characters on site.
Angelica enjoyed taking part in activities and regularly attended community events – bringing smiles to all those who she met while enjoying being the centre of attention.
Affectionately known by staff as Jellybean, Angelica passed peacefully surrounded by the Sanctuary team and vet and her mini herd of friends – Bella, Wizzy and Geraldine.
“Our team display such love and care for all of our animals, and it brings great sadness when we lose any of our beloved animals,” a post on the Sanctuary’s Facebook page reads.
“We do, however, have many happy memories to remind us of our lovely donkeys.
“Rest in peace, beautiful Angelica and Jill.”
