DO YOU recognise these Isle of Wight pubs, from these sketches?

Alfred Caws was a survivor of the Lancastria tragedy.

After the war he absorbed himself in art.

Scroll through the gallery of his sketches above.

Look out for images of the Griffin in Godshill, the Blacksmith Arms near Newport, the Pilot Boat in Bembridge, the Sloop Inn in Wootton Bridge, the White Horse in Whitwell and the Battery Hotel in Springvale.

And could that be a self portrait of Alf sitting inside the Blacksmith Arms, Newport?

The story behind all these sketches includes a bit of my art history.

From 1970 to 1980, Alf and I contributed to a magazine called Wight Life – nothing to do with the current WightLink Wight Life magazine.

Each edition, I drew the portraits for the profile page and Alf drew the pub sketches.
