A CARPENTER caught with a stash of cannabis in his car, with scales and an item to grind the drug, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates.

Cameron Younie, of Westfield Park, Ryde, admitted possessing cannabis on July 21 last year, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday, March 24.

In January, Island magistrates disqualified Younie from driving for 12 months for drug driving in East Cowes in October last year — his second such offence.

Police on routine patrol pulled 18-year-old Younie over in nearby Quay Street.

An officer who spoke with Younie could smell cannabis from the vehicle and saw weighing scales and a cannabis grinder, said Liz Miller, prosecuting.

Younie failed a roadside drugs test, and was detained while officers searched the car.

They found 28.89g of cannabis, in a plastic bag, hidden under a seat. Its street value was between £245 and £265.

For Younie, Oscar Vincent said his client, when intrerviewed by the police, admitted it was his cannabis, but it was possession only.

Younie was aged 17 at the time of the offence, but a delay in the case saw him face the adult court.

Magistrates handed Younie a six-month conditional discharge, with £85 costs and a £20 surcharge.
