First donkey born at Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary has died

Peacefully, the Sanctuary said goodbye to its little donkey Winston – named after the farm where the animal rescue centre is based.

Winston was involved in lots of community work, visiting care homes, attending events and bringing smiles to many people he met.

Recently, however, he had been receiving veterinary treatment and underwent extensive diagnostic tests at Liphook Equine Hospital.

Though there was no conclusive diagnosis, Winston’s blood tests were not good, and he was rapidly losing weight, the Sanctuary said.

Once home from Liphook, Winston received around-the-clock care in Wroxall and had regular visits from Island vets.

Despite the best efforts of the Sanctuary’s staff and volunteers, with the support of veterinary teams, Winston’s condition was deteriorating, and he was beginning to suffer.

Posting on its Facebook page, the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary said: “With the sun shining and surrounded by those who cared deeply for him, together with our vets, we helped Winston pass peacefully. 

“It is always difficult losing any of our beloved animals, and he will be greatly missed, as he was a sweet little donkey who loved fuss and attention along with walks around the meadows.

“We will miss him greatly, and he will be remembered with great fondness.

“All of our donkeys end their days here at the Sanctuary, and we ensure all our animals receive the highest standard of care.

“Rest in peace, Winston.”
