It will be business as usual come next month, insists Isle of Wight Tomatoes, despite a nationwide shortage of the fruit.

The company, which also runs the Tomato Stall, has said it plans to continue supporting customers on the Island.

It comes amid reports that some UK supermarkets are rationing tomatoes.

Morrisons in Newport is among the shops affected. Pictures taken today (Wednesday) show shelves empty.

In the last few hours, Tesco has announced it will join the list of supermarkets to limit sales of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.

The shortage has been blamed on bad weather in Europe and Africa, disrupting supplies.

There are also reports that, due to rising energy bills, farmers are struggling to pay the costs of running greenhouses.

Isle of Wight Tomatoes grows its own produce at its base in Arreton.

Asked how it will be affected, the company told the Isle of Wight County Press: "We are currently not in season and our Isle of Wight crops are set to start in late March which, looking at the current climate, is much needed!

"We plan on supporting all of our local customers as usual as soon as the crop is ready."

Isle of Wight Tomatoes' range of products get distributed across the UK.

Most recently Selfridges was added to that list, which already includes retailer John Lewis.
