A man has been arrested and released from custody under investigation, following an alleged assault on Ryde's Union Street in the early hours of Saturday morning (4).

Another man, 31, was taken to hospital after the incident, which police said happened at around 1.28am.

Officers had closed Union Street for a time — from French Franks on the corner of St Thomas' Square down to the bottom of the road.

The force has since confirmed a 23-year-old man was arrested yesterday (Sunday).

He was detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He has been released from custody but remains under investigation.

Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
