A MAN has been taken to hospital after an assault saw a police cordon on the Isle of Wight in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, February 4).

Officers were called to Ryde's Union Street at 1.28am after a 31-year-old man had been assaulted.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson confirmed the man was taken to hospital for treatment.

No arrests have been made at this time, but an investigation remains ongoing.

Police closed Union Street from French Franks on the corner of St Thomas' Square down to the bottom of Union Street.

The lower part of the street was cordoned off, from Biscoes Solicitors to Sams's Chicken.

The Fantastic Store, found within the cordon between the above businesses, announced it opened as usual at 10am.

Southern Vectis buses, which were diverting via Spencer Road and St Thomas Street, have now returned to their usual routes.

Police are asking for anyone who may have information to contact them on 101, using crime reference number 44230047351.
