Isle of Wight members of the gym at Gurnard Pines have been emailed to say they are unable to access the on-site leisure facilities until March, while 'improvements and repairs' are carried out by the company that owns the site.

In an statement, GUPI Properties Limited, claimed a lease on part of the complex has been forfeited.

Meanwhile, in an email to leisure club users today (Monday), the leaseholder behind the gym and swimming pool said it had been locked out of the building and had ceased trading.

Site owner, GUPI Properties Limited, said: "The management team of GUPI Properties Limited appreciates that there has been many unforeseeable factors that have affected the current leaseholder’s ability to make the business succeed such as Covid-19, utility prices and the cost of living crisis."

GUPI Properties Limited said: "We can make this centre thrive once more.

"We will be looking at the current use of the space within the building and are considering how the use of the ballroom and chartroom can reach its full potential, allowing events such as weddings and parties to take place in the future."

GUPI Properties Limited said staff would be offered employment 'where possible' and funds would be made available for refurbishment.

It said: "We will reopen at the beginning of March, with a fresh look, ready to invite all gym members and visitors alike."

The Pavilion bar and restaurant remains open.

GUPI Properties Limited said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience that today’s events have caused."

In its email, Fitness at Gurnard said: "I want to thank you all for the last 7 years and the support you have given myself and the club and wish you good luck in wherever you decide to train in the future."
