New proposals are seeking to lower the speed limit for drivers approaching the Racecourse roundabout, as part of plans for a new football stadium on the outskirts of Newport.

Currently the stretch of road leading to the roundabout, in Whippingham, is 50 mph both ways.

The Isle of Wight Council, under the Road Traffic Regulation Act, is proposing reducing that to 40 mph, in both directions.

It forms part of work to build a new ground for Newport FC, which is supposedly under development on land off the Racecourse.

Last month (December) supporters of the club were told building could start in March, if enough conditions could be signed off by the middle of this month.

One fan warned a lack of progress could signal "the end of Newport FC."

In the latest development, the council has put forward a Traffic Regulation Order to 'ensure safe entrance and exit from the football ground'.

When entering the ground from East Cowes, vehicles would be required to use the roundabout.

And when exiting the ground onto the Racecourse, drivers would only be able to turn left towards the roundabout.
