A day after a land collapse in the middle of Ventnor, in which one local resident says he almost died, the Isle of Wight Council has asked the owner of a concreted area to make it safe.
County Hall says it will monitor the progress of efforts to shore up land between West Street and Victoria Street, which is separated by a vertical earth wall, about 10ft high.
At the bottom of it, a huge pile of earth and rubble - and Keith Salisbury's garden gate - now lies.
As the Isle of Wight County Press reported yesterday (Thursday), 78-year-old Keith was in his garden when the land gave way.

A building used to be on the site, but its demolition was completed last month.
A retaining wall was kept in place for safety.
Since the 20 ft sq patch of ground collapsed, more land has given way overnight, according to residents.
The Isle of Wight Council said: "The role we have is for public protection, so our emphasis is now requesting that the site owner makes the situation safe as soon as possible, involving relevant specialists.
"We will continue to liaise and monitor the proposed works until we are satisfied that it is safe."
The Isle of Wight County Press has contacted the owner of the land to ask for a comment.
